Dr. Simonds and Michelle Kennedy, NP-C hosted a special Ask Me Anything Live show all about keto snacks! They shared their favorite keto snacks from sweet to savory, to packaged and fresh goodies.
Is snacking okay?
It really depends. If you’re snacking in excess amounts, then it’s better to use that as a meal. It’s not shocking news that many Americans eat too often and too much. When snacking, it’s best to stick to low-carb products that are calorie and portion-controlled, especially when trying to lose or manage your weight. Pre-packed items are great for those that have busy schedules and are on the go.
If you’re eating smaller meals, then snacking between meals is entirely appropriate. It’s important to eat when you’re hungry and stop eating when you’re full. Many snacks can also be made into a meal and are also great for sharing and entertaining.
Keto Snack Faves
Of course, we had to start the show off with…BACON! It’s an excellent source of animal protein and fat and can be used in so many recipes and meals. It’s a great addition to making extra tasty meals and can be found already cooked and ready to go. Be sure to read the label and stay away from the sweet varieties or those coated in sugar or syrup. This makes a fast, convenient, affordable, and high protein option. Easy peasy!
Charcuterie boards make a great snack option and can be made with meats such as salami, pepperoni, cheese, and olives. Tune in to the show for a fun way to jazz up some salami for a pretty presentation on your next charcuterie board. You tell us, is it a rose or a sombrero?!
Most grocery stores also have pre-made charcuterie snacks that can be great to keep on hand. They’re also great for traveling and for planning ahead. Remember, planning is key! Just avoid the varieties that have dried fruits and other sweet options included.
For fruit options, definitely stick with berries. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and fresh cranberries. Frozen berries are great too! Blueberries are filled with antioxidants and are our favorite recommendation.
Nuts, such as almonds are great! Watch your portions, as they are very calorie-dense. Remember a handful, not a canful!
For sweet snacks, Rebel Icecream has great ingredients and can satisfy a sweet tooth on a keto diet. Again, watch your portions. Just because it’s a keto product, you shouldn’t eat them in excess. They are great for a treat once in a while but can stall weight loss when over-consumed. Sugar-free jello topped with whipped heavy cream is great for a sweet tooth. Protein bars catered to keto diets can also be a great addition when used occasionally.

Quest chips are so versatile! They can be used as a vessel for dips or crumbled up for a crunchy topping for soups and salads.
For a quick Tuna or Chicken salad, just add mayo, your favorite seasonings (Everything But The Bagel is Michelle’s fave), hot sauce, mustard, dill pickle, celery, onion, plain greek yogurt, and even some cream cheese. To keep it keto, avoid sugar or sweet relishes.
Alcoholic beverages can be consumed on a keto diet, but it’s important to keep a few things in mind. The body will process all alcohol before food, which causes a slow down in fat burning. 8 ounces a day of non-sweet wines, or a splash of liquor over a zero-calorie beverage is an acceptable option. Hard seltzers and low-carb beer are other options. Watch portion sizes and read labels as alcohol can definitely slow down weight loss and contain hidden sugars.
To satisfy a salty craving, pre-packaged olives, Folio Cheese Wraps, Laughing Cow cheese wedges, Parm Crisps, pork rinds, beef jerky, and sunflower seeds are some of the items mentioned. Please avoid all popcorn and corn products!
With all pre-packed foods, always read the label and avoid products that have sugar. Also, everyone is different. If you try a keto pre-packaged food and don’t tolerate it well, simply eliminate it from your diet and look for other options. As you can see, there are many healthy options available to keep you satisfied that are great for a keto diet.
